There are many types of dump trucks but in this course we shall focus mainly on two namely the 777 Dump Truck also known as Rigid body and Articulated Dump Truck (ADT)
Purpose of Qualification
The qualifying learner will be able to operate a dump truck by understanding the functions of starting, shutting down and operating procedures for the machine. Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of Construction Plant operators.
A dump truck, known also as a dumping truck, dump trailer, dumper trailer, dump lorry or dumper lorry or a dumper for short, is used for transporting materials (such as dirt, gravel, or demolition waste) for construction as well as coal. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited (“dumped”) on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery.

Demonstrating knowledge of the functions of an articulated dump truck.
Planning for work activities and prepare work area.
Starting and shutting down articulated dump truck.
Operating articulated dump truck.
Transporting articulated dump truck to and from site.

The Tasks and duties of the dump truck driver may include and not limited to the following
- Driving trucks to the destination site.
- Pulling levers or turning cranks to tilt the body and dump the truck’s contents.
- Inspecting the truck from tyres, lights and brakes to fuel, oil and water.
- Performing pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Keeping the truck clean and in good working order.
- Inspecting material to ensure it has been loaded correctly and securely.
- Reviewing shipping documents to verify data is accurate.
- Maintaining a driver log.
Dump Truck Drivers can sometimes be expected to work away from home for a period of time if a job is out of town. There may also be a requirement for you to live within what’s called a ‘fatigue zone’, meaning you do not need to drive more than 60 minutes to get to or from home.
